The Guiding Light Church Community Master Plan

The Guiding Light Community is a planned development located on the eastern side of Birmingham near the Birmingham Race Track. The intention is to create a community conducive to the development of strong moral and family values for family dwellings. The development consists of approximately 215 acres bisected by the five lane boulevard of John Rogers Drive.

To the west of the boulevard, the church has already begun its development on approximately 75 acres set aside for its use. The church overall investment in this first phase is approximately $15,500,000 as of this date. It consists of the 119,000 Sq. Ft. Worship and educational facility seating 1500 people. Fifteen acres on this side also have been set aside for community service facilities, such as a Neighborhood Center with recreation area and a Boys and Girls home.

The Boys and Girls home will provide resident for children who do not have the opportunity to be brought up in a home where father and mother cannot provide for them in an appropriate environment. This home will restore hope and build stability in the lives of the young people who are hurting and have been abused, neglected or even forgotten by society. It will be staffed by members of the Guiding Light Church who have a heart of love for children. We will address their physical emotional social and spiritual needs in a home like Christians setting.

The remaining 150 acres to the east will consist of five developments buffered by forested walking trails:

  • The frontage along John Rogers will be used for commercial development such as office space, medical services, a retirement and assisted living facility with apartments for the elderly and financial services (including the Jefferson Community Development Federal Credit Union - an entity sponsored by the church)
  • A senior citizens retirement and assisted living housing development. In this home the church will see to it that the senior citizens who reside there will have a community of their own. It is designed to offer an alternative to institutional living and to enable senior citizens who are also in need of assistance with daily tasks to live independently with limited assistance in the community.
  • A community of garden homes or townhouses or approximately 1500 sq. ft. (Est. 40 to 60 units initially) beginning at $150,000 per unit.
  • A community of single family dwellings of at least 2000 to 3000 sq. ft. (Est. 70 homes) beginning at $240,000.
  • A gated community with a club house and homes ranging from $350,000 and up exceeding 3500 sq. ft. (Est. 70 homes)

There will be a neighborhood association created that will oversee maintaining the covenants established for the communities. An Architectural Review Committee will also be established to review all new house plans and changes to outside construction to any existing homes to assure the standards of the community are maintained.

It is the wish of the Guiding Light Church to also donate a portion of this land for the establishment of a police substation in this area to provide a place for the needs of the officers serving the community.
