Renew Your Mind & Transform Your Life

The Power of the Tongue

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Pr 18:21, NKJV)

Today, I want to make plain to you the power of your ability to speak! One of the greatest natural gifts God gave man was the ability to communicate with other men. That ability to speak to other men has the power of life and death.

I will show you that the power of the tongue has greater power than you and I normally realize. The tongue has power you need to tap into for the glory of God.

The people of the world know this truth better than the people of the kingdom. They have used tongue power -- Otherwise known as speech, to enslave and rule over millions of people. Yet, you have a power that far excels the people of the world And your lack of knowledge of it, is very destructive. All of us need to start utilizing the  power of the tongue and change our world by revealing to the world they have been drinking The Kool Aid of Satan.

I will show you your responsibility to use your words to speak the gospel of Christ, then I will tell you how all of you can be greater witnesses for Christ, if you you really think the gospel is important. I will show you how you can do even greater works than what Jesus did in his time to share the word.

Let’s go!

James has this to say regarding the tongue, “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!” (Jas 3:5, NKJV)

The tongue is a small part of the body, yet it has tremendous power!

You need to say, “The ability to speak is a tremendous power!

The world knows this and wants to limited your freedom of speech. The world does not want to hear about the Gospel of Christ.

We can look at two exceptional men in the 20th century and see the power  of speech.

Adolph Hitler and Winston Churchill. With their tongue power used their ability to speak using impressive words. These two men rallied their nations and inspired them to fight a war of global conflict. By the power of their speech, hundreds of thousands of people were willing to give their lives for what they preached. One led his nation to total defeat and the other his nation to complete victory.

Indeed, death and life are in the power of the tongue. They use their words to persuade people to yield to their will and do their bidding; even to the point of dying for what they said was worth dying for. Oh how I wish many more Christians would feel that Christ was worth dying for.too many don’t and will not use the power of their tongue to persuade others to accept him in their life.

We see other people of the world using the power of their words throughout history affect the will of others. They could persuade people to do things and line up with their will just by the way they spoke.

Martin Luther King is another great example. He rallied all types of people to believe in nonviolence even to the point of allowing themselves to be beaten, bitten by dogs, allowing fire hoses to be sprayed against them tearing their skin and even allow themselves to be beaten to death. What a powerful man he was just by the words he spoke.

We need to understand that God has given to every man the ability to use their tongue to do powerful things. Though, not everyone has taken advantage of this ability.

I hope after today I will have encouraged you to use your ability to speak and speak life to those in the world around you and use the rod in your hand.

Listen, let me show you another example of what God said this about the power of humanity to speak and communicate with other men.

“1 Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. 3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. 4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”” (Ge 11:1–7, NKJV)

It is significant point that must be noted that in the first verse, we see they had one language, and one speech. Then, we see they began to use their tongue to become as one and they said let us do this.

Because they had one language and they were speaking words with their tongue as one people God said “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”” (Ge 11:1–7, NKJV)

There is power in the tongue and those who love it, twill perfect their ability to speak and will benefit from what they speak.

All human beings derived this ability from God. He is the author and creator of the use of the tongue to bring things to pass.

“1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.” (Ge 1:1–3, NKJV)

Please listen now:

What did God do to get rid of the darkness? – He spoke to the light, and the darkness was banished by the light.

There was power when he spoke! He spoke to the light and the darkness disappeared! This is a Selah moment.

I want to ask your question now:

How long was there darkness? Answer: As long as God did not speak.

We have the power to use our tongue to speak things and change things too because we are created in the image and likeness of God. The people at the Tower of Babel could do an evil thing because they spoke together as one. Is that not what people in the world today are doing? Have they not rallied together to say things that are contrary to the word of God and stand together as one against the people of God?

What are we going to do about that?

Another example of the tongue being used in a powerful but deceptive way.

“1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”” (Ge 3:1, NKJV)

Speech is powerful. It has the ability to influence others. Satan used his speech to deceive the woman. The ability to speak is one of the most powerful gifts God has given to man. That's why he gave us the Scripture, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Pr 18:21, NKJV)

By our ability to speak, we can take hold of human minds and persuade them to submit to our will, or can influence them to do things they might not otherwise do.

The tongue is a very powerful weapon. It can be used for good, or can be used for evil. God is giving you the ability to choose what you are going to do. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Pr 18:21, NKJV)

Say life and death are in the power of my tongue.

You choose what you will do with your tongue. Are you speaking life or death?

Let me show you something else God said about our ability to speak. 1 Co 1:21 (KJV 1900) — 21 .... it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

Repeat the Scripture;. “it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”

Get this! You can use your tongue to save people from an eternal hell because that is the will of God for you do so. It pleased him to give you this ability. Your words are so powerful! You can affect people's eternal destiny by what you say to them!

Come on people! Get woke and understand this! God has blessed you to be his messenger of life to this world. He has called you his ambassador. You are salt and light to this world enveloped in utter darkness.

If you don't speak out against the darkness in this world, the darkness will remain, and your children and your grandchildren will suffer persecution from the darkness you refused to dismiss with your words.

Darkness is coming over the world of humanity today very rapidly and God has graced you with an opportunity at this time, and in this generation, to speak his word to the masses and dispel the darkness. What are you going to do?

Your tongue can be used in two ways; for life or death. You can use it to save, or you can use it to condemn. You need to realize however, if God did not speak, the darkness would have remained.

If you don't speak, the darkness in this world will remain. You cannot be silent without being an accomplice to the evil that's going on in the world.

There are two types of people in the world; those that speak the word of life, and those that speak death. You either speak the gospel of Christ or you speak another gospel.

You are created in his image and likeness and have a responsibility to speak life. Or you can speak death. Just as God had the power to create the universe, you have power with your words. Death or life over yourselves, your families, your community, and even if bold enough, the world. You must realize you have the power to affect a person’s eternal destiny!

What have you been speaking? Have you even become aware of your power?

Have you been speaking life over people? Or have you been speaking death?

You speak life when you speak the Scripture. You speak death when you speak anything other than Scripture.

The only thing that really matters is the word of God. It is the only thing that is life that will last eternally.

Our Responsibility to Proclaim the Truth

We are his children and ministers of his gospel, must take this great truth to heart. We must act accordingly and act aggressively. We must start speaking life. Time is running out! “12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.” (Mt 11:12, NKJV)

Every day that goes by and we don’t proclaim the word of God, and don’t preach life to this world, God is going to hold us accountable for what goes on during our watch. We are letting people die an eternal death because we don’t speak the truth of the word of God.

17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his evil ways, he will die for his sin; but you will have saved yourself.” (Eze 3:17–19, NIV84)

We have accountability for what goes on in this world during our generation!

Everyone of us! Is that not what God said?

Let us read verse Eze 3:18 again’ 18 When I say to a wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his evil ways in order to save his life, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood.

I don’t like this! But we cannot sit silently by and not proclaim the gospel to the perishing! We know the truth. Why are we afraid or ashamed to tell others about it?

We are a royal priesthood and must be ministers of the gospel of truth!

Our society today is enslaved by the lies of the evil one. He has raised up men and women who preach his gospel of death relentlessly day by day.

Satan has people who are unashamed to speak his lies as though they are truth. These same people are willing to cut you down with their words if you challenge them in their apostasy.

I won’t name some the common sin today. You know there are certain ones I speak of all the time, I won’t speak about them today, but you know what I’m talking about. God will hold you accountable and responsible for the thousands of people that will fall prey to the lies of the devil because you supported the people and not speaking out against these wrongs.

Every day people are dying not knowing the gospel truth because some of you are afraid to offend them while they are sinning. Some of you support organizations that promote death. Some support organizations that clearly violate the written word of God because that’s the way they were raised.

Let me ask you a question, do you really believe that God is going to hold you guiltless when you refuse to speak out against things that he says are evil? Do you really believe you can support those that promote what God says is evil and you are not just as guilty as they are?

We, the children of the light, must not sit silently by while the children of darkness become more aggressive, enslaving the minds of ignorant men and women, boys and girls, by preaching the lies of their master. They don’t know the truth. Yet, you do and you are quiet? You are not telling them the truth!

God says we will be accountable for their blood!

What are we to say to this? Are we to remain silent? Are we to keep our peace? Indeed can we be peaceful when the very foundations of the word of God are being challenged? What can we do? What can we say?

What We Are to Do

How was Moses to free the Israelites? He was to go and speak to Pharaoh. He was to use his tongue and speak to this great King.

Moses did not want to speak out to Pharaoh. Perhaps he was afraid what Pharaoh would do to him. God told him to use his voice and speak, and the slaves would be set free. All he had to do was speak the word of God. Yet, he was afraid. What did God tell him to use as a tool?

“Then Moses answered and said, “But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, ‘The Lord has not appeared to you.’ ” So the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A rod.”” (Ex 4:1–2, NKJV)

A rod was common item in that day. And God told Moses to use what was in his hand. He said whatever you have, use it, and with me you will be successful.

Then Moses gave the excuse that many of us give about speaking to an issue. “Then Moses said to the Lord, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”” (Ex 4:10, NKJV)

“So the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.”” (Ex 4:11–12, NKJV)

God was telling him to simply say to pharaoh, “Let my people go.” Notice this regarding the rod:

17 And you shall take this rod in your hand, with which you shall do the signs.”” (Ex 4:17, NKJV)

God has called us to be missionaries in this world. We are to be witnesses of who he is. Yet many of us are fearful and we don’t want to speak.

But we see that God let Moses use something that was of comfort to him to help him accomplish his mission. What was that?

Now, what do you have that is common in this generation? What do you have that in your hand that you can use to share his gospel?

(Have everyone to take out their cell phone. Turn out the lights in auditorium.)

It is dark now. What can we do? So much darkness. Does anyone have revelation of what to do? Can anyone show us some light so we may see the way? What do you have in your hand?

See how the darkness runs away in our presence when the light is used?

Matthew 5:14–15 (NKJV): 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

You are light of the world. Let your light shine!

I want to encourage every person that knows the gospel to look at what is in your hand. Begin to utilize all that God has given you to lift your voice and preach the gospel of Christ. You have the power of life and death in your mouth!

Use your cell phone now. It is what you have in your hand. Get on social media and speak words of life. What is the word of life? The word of life is God’s word!

Why should you speak stupidity and things of the world with people of the world? The people of the world need the word of God. If you don’t tell them who will? If you don’t tell them God will hold you accountable for their blood!

Use whatever you have! Billions of people around the world are becoming snared by distractions presented to them through the Internet. Take a look around. See how many are scrolling through their cell phones, feeding their minds with the foolishness of the world. Where are the people of the gospel? Where's the alternative to the world’s lies? Where are the children of God?

Look at what the Scripture says in Colossians, “5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Col 4:5–6, NKJV)

Verse 6, let your speech be with grace, seasoned with salt. The use of the word’s out here means the word of God. Speak the word of God to others!

The pulpit is not the only platform today to preach the gospel. You do not have to wait until you come to church. Jesus said, Mt 22:9 (NKJV) — 9 Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’

Every one of you has within your hands the ability to touch the world; to bring truth where there are lies; light where there is darkness; hope where there is hopelessness; life where there is death.

Do not say you cannot, when the Scripture says you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. The same God that called you is the same God that called Moses. Not only is he with you, he is inside of you.

Be bold! Step out of the boat. Who knows, perhaps you will walk on the water? Maybe you will do what no other one has done? Be bold and do what you have not done before. Php 1:6 (NKJV) — 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

Use your voice and proclaim the foolishness of the gospel. Bring life to yourselves, life to your family and friends, and life to our city and country.

The voices of darkness are not ashamed to proclaim their lies and bring death to masses of people. Be a child of the King and proclaim the kingdom of God is at hand.

If you won’t speak to the world, then at least speak to your brothers and sisters within the church about God.

Mal 3:16–17 (NKJV): 16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, And the Lord listened and heard them;

So a book of remembrance was written before Him

For those who fear the Lord

And who meditate on His name.

We must not miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity. An opportunity that presents itself everyday.

Everyday that passes and we are not sharing the gospel, is a day lost that could have meant a blessing to us and the world!

17 “They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts,

“On the day that I make them My jewels.

And I will spare them

As a man spares his own son who serves him.”

Use your voice, use your ability to speak, and take the rod that is in your hand, your cell phone and use it to speak the message of the gospel.

The people of the world speak their lives, let the people of the word speak God’s word and be heard!

REMEMBER

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Pr 18:21, NKJV)

Your ability to speak is one of the greatest natural gifts God gave you. Now communicate the gospel with other men. Use the tool that you have in your hand.

James has this to say regarding the tongue, “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!” (Jas 3:5, NKJV)

Don’t underestimate the power of your words. Don’t remain silent anymore!
