WELCOME, HOLY SPIRIT
Learning to Live in His Presence — Part I
CENTRAL TRUTH
The Holy Spirit does not merely visit the believer. He lives within us. Therefore, we should learn to live every day consciously aware of His presence.
John 14:16–17
I.
The first step toward deeper fellowship with the Holy Spirit is becoming consciously aware that He is already present.
He does not occasionally visit us. He lives within us. He remains with us. We are His dwelling place.
John 14:16–17
Consider:
II.
We did not earn the Holy Spirit. God gave Him to us.
Jesus taught that His departure would be to the disciples' advantage because the Helper would come. Therefore, our relationship with the Holy Spirit should include gratitude.
Acts 2:38
Consider:
III. REMEMBER THAT HE IS A PERSON, NOT MERELY A POWER
The Holy Spirit is not an “it.” He knows. He wills. He speaks. He guides. He teaches. He can be grieved.
Because He is a Person, we can have fellowship with Him.
John 16:13–14
IV. TALK TO HIM BECAUSE HE IS PRESENT
Fellowship with the Holy Spirit should not be limited
Acknowledge His presence throughout your day. Ask for His help when tempted, His guidance when confused, His strength when weak, and His teaching when you open Scripture. Thank Him when He helps you.
John 14:16
Personal Reflection
When, during my normal day,
What could remind me to acknowledge His presence?
V. DON'T MAKE PRAYER A MONOLOGUE
Prayer should involve more than telling God what we want and
Pray with an open Bible. Speak to God. Then listen to what He has already spoken through His Word. Allow the Holy Spirit to teach you, remind you, correct you, and apply God's Word to your life.
John 14:26
VI. INVITE
Ask God to reveal what you may not recognize about yourself.
Is there an attitude you are excusing? Is there someone you have not forgiven? Is pride influencing your decisions? Is there something in your life that is grieving the Holy Spirit?
Personal Reflection
What might the Holy Spirit be showing me about myself that I need to address?
VII. THANK HIM EVEN WHEN HIS MINISTRY IS UNCOMFORTABLE
We appreciate the Comforter when He comforts us. We should also appreciate Him when
Conviction is an expression of God's love. When sin, pride, bitterness, unforgiveness, selfishness, or disobedience is exposed, the Holy Spirit is not working against us. He is working to sanctify us.
Don't only thank the Holy Spirit when
Hebrews 12:11
VIII. PRACTICE HIS PRESENCE
Practicing His presence does not mean trying to bring the Holy Spirit near. He is already present.
It means developing the habit of living consciously aware of the One who already lives within you.
Galatians 5:25
