Message Title:

“The God Who Provides!” (Understanding The Great Names Of God)

(Final Version)

We all have a name.

We were given a name at birth.

that name is something we respond to.

Some of us go by nicknames.

but those nicknames are only allowed to “special people.” Not just anyone can call you “kool-aid.”

Not just anyone can call you “pookie.”

But there was a reason they called you that!

Page 9 of 9

Some of these names have meanings. some of them are cute.

But in biblical times…

those names were important. People were defined by their names. That name described their character.

Jabez was named because his mother gave birth to him in pain. His name was associated with pain.

But names aren’t just things people call us… When people call the right name…

It’s something you respond to. In a room of people talking…

You can hear your name being called. So a name is how people refer to you. But also what you respond to.

and THAT name can define your character.

Let’s talk about the character of someone.

Isaiah 9:6

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Wonderful Counselor Mighty God Everlasting Father Prince of Peace

He will be called all of these names? Which ones?

Well each one of these things refers to a different thing.

Page 9 of 9

Wonderful Counselor

- a God who hears us and guides us through words or action.

Psalm 23:3b

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Mighty God

  • a God who is strong, who will be greater than anything.

Psalm 24:8

8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

Prince Of Peace

  • our God is peace

John 14:27

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

These are just some of the words that are described of Jesus. These aren’t just names.

not JUST nicknames.

They’re personalities.

They are attributes.

People may know you as a father/mother. others may know you as a son/daughter.

or a sister/brother.

others may know you as a wife/husband/significant other. others may know you by your job title.

Each of these titles have their own personalities. You could call them “hats.”

Each hat has a purpose and a place where it’s best worn.

You don’t need your “work” hat when it’s time to wear the “father” hat. You don’t need your “spouse” hat when it’s time to go to “work.”

Page 9 of 9

Today we’ll talk about the different “personalities” of God. Because it’s through his name you see his character!

It’s how you KNOW what God is…what he will do! This is how we stop limiting God in our lives.

This is how we get God out of the box we put him in. Also

when you want to appeal to our God.

Knowing his name is a GREAT way to respond to him!

Jehovah Jireh - The God Who Provides

Jireh is a name given to God as the God who “answers a need.”

Philippians 4:19

19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

He will meet “all” your needs. This tells us that there is a God.

and he will meet the needs you have.

We All Have Many Needs, But There Is No Need That Is Greater Than Our God!

He can’t meet the need if he isn’t greater… this is not based on a want…

but the things you NEED. Because we have no need greater than God… we should look to the one who can SUPPLY it!

Who Is The Provider For Our Needs? Our God Is!

But his provision covers everything!

Philippians 4:19

Page 9 of 9

19 And my God will meet ALL your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

This doesn’t just talk about what you need in the physical. this isn’t just about food, finances, and a place to live.

This is talking about ALL of our needs.

Nothing is too big…

nothing is too little. NOTHING is insignificant.

which also means… NOTHING has to be overlooked!

So this also applies to your mental, emotional and spiritual needs.

Whatever Our Need Is, God Is Our Answer!

Let’s look at how God met some needs.

Genesis 2:7

7 the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

The Lord created Adam from the dust.

Verse 8-9

8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

The Lord planted a garden. He placed the man there.

He created trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food.

Verse 15-17

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

The Lord told Adam…

Page 9 of 9

you’re hungry.

I created you to be hungry.

there will always be a need that has to be filled outside of you.

Adam couldn’t satisfy his hunger on his own. He couldn’t satisfy thirst on his own.

But God created him to hunger and thirst… But ALSO providing the answer.

“I have created all these trees and commanded them to produce fruit.” that hunger you have can be satisfied from any of these trees here.

The Lord knows what you need before you do.

and he has ALREADY provided an answer for that need.

The Lord Allows Us To Have Needs So He Can Show Us HE Is Our Source!

The Lord provided for Adam’s physical need. But he did more!

Verse 18

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

There wasn’t a physical “need” Adam had. He wasn’t “hungry” or “thirsty anymore.

God solved that.

But he “needed” a companion. Adam didn’t know he needed it.

But God did!

This shows the power of our God.

God Can Answer Needs You Didn’t Even Know You Had!

Page 9 of 9

God can bless you with things you didn’t even know you needed! God can allow new people in your life because you needed an outlet. This is why we should make sure we aren’t putting God in a box!

We All Have Many Needs, But There Is No Need That Is Greater Than Our God!

God provides for us physically.

He gives us the strength to go to work each day. He gives us places we can get our food.

Can God Provide A Solution For The Things That Stress Us Out?

Yes!

Psalm 50:15

and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.

This is saying that in our days of trouble… call upon God.

He will deliver!

What Types Of Things Can God Provide? He Can Provide Deliverance!

Many times we call on God later.

We try our own ways of handling our problems. When God can provide himself!

Yet too many times we lean on others to do what God said he WOULD do! How many times do we run to others when trouble comes?

Isaiah 2:22 (NCV)

22 You should stop trusting in people to save you, because people are only human; they aren’t able to help you.

another

Page 9 of 9

Psalm 118:8

8 It is better to trust the Lord than to trust people.

Why is God better to trust for your problems? God told Moses that he is the “answer.” Moses asked God who he was.

Exodus 3:14

14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

I am

I am whatever I need to be!

I will provide WHATEVER I need to to meet this need! What did he do to Israel coming out of Egypt?

Deuteronomy 8:3

3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

feeding with manna…

which you or our fathers hadn’t known. Means they hadn’t seen it before!

It was new!

The Lord Will Do Whatever It Takes To Meet Our Needs! He Will Even Do A New Thing If Necessary!

Isaiah 49:23b

“Anyone who trusts in me will not be disappointed.”

Trust In The Lord! He Is The TRUE Provider For ALL Of Your Needs! It’s In His Name!

Today I am asking you to know the name Jireh. To KNOW that it means that God is our provider.

To TRUST in him to supply ALL your needs according to HIS riches in glory.

Page 9 of 9

What need to you have that’s bigger than God? Trust him.

Give it to him!

Psalm 37:25-26

25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. 26 They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed.

Those who trust in the Lord to provide for them… They are ALWAYS generous and lend freely.

why?

because they have overflow.

Their children are blessed? why?

because they trust God also!

We are talking about the personalities of God. The first is:

Jireh - Our Provider

What Is The Need? Trust He Will Provide!

This Week:

  • Separate Our Needs From Wants

    • God CAN meet wants, but WILL meet needs

  • Pray About Those Needs

    • don’t be anxious about anything but by prayer and petition present requests.

  • Ask The Lord For Clarity To See Where He Is Providing

    • 2 reasons for this:

      • because the answer could already be there. God showed Adam where the trees were

      • to make sure Adam wasn’t solving hunger at the wrong source. sometimes we may THINK things are God…and they aren’t.
