{All scriptures are NIV84 unless stated}

We spent the last month talking about the path to purpose.

We learned that the Lord has created something for everyone of us to do.

We talked about 7 things about your purpose and 6 ways to find it.

This month we’ll build more on it.

because it goes along with something else.

Matthew 5:13-15

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

The Lord calls us salt and light for the world. we aren’t supposed to hide these things.

We are to be salt and light…

We Are To Be A Light For Others!

We are to let our light shine… so others can see it…

and praise our Father.

Matthew 5:16

16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

We are to light the path so others can see the Lord!

It’s not for us!

It’s for him!

We are set apart from the world… to point others back to him!

We Are To Lead Others To Christ!

If we are to lead others to Christ…

If You Have Accepted Christ, You Are A Leader!

2 Corinthians 5:16-17

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

From now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. “no one saved.”

They did it to Christ…

and they were wrong.

So if anyone is in Christ… they are NEW!

what was is gone.

what he has called is left!

If You Are A Believer, You Are Called To Be A Leader!

You are a light in the darkness! You are the salt of the earth!

you are here to preserve!

You are an ambassador of Christ!

You are the one who the Lord chose to bring order to chaos! you are here to be DIFFERENT!

You are the one here to lead!

Your light is to show others who God is! You are a leader!

{repeat}

“I Am A Leader!”

The impact of every leader may be different… but each of us…

if we have Christ,

has a leader in us!

Message Title:

“Building The Leader In You”

This month, we will be taking nuggets of leadership from God’s people.

We will start with Moses.

Moses had grown up as royalty.

as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. but he was actually a Hebrew.

We KNOW the Lord will use him in a big way.

so let’s talk about some of the character traits of THIS leader.

Exodus 2:11–12:

11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12 Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

He was beating one of his own people.

What the scripture says is that when he had gotten older. he went to be among his own people.

He saw what they had to go through. their “hard labor.”

The hard work they had to deal with. the heavy burden of slavery.

and when they messed up. they were beaten.

He sees an Egyptian beating one of his own people. and kills him.

{Question:}

Why Did Moses Kill The Egyptian?

because he saw what was happening to his own people…

who he now cared for.

Later he would lead these people out of Egypt…

but it was established TODAY he had compassion on them.’ it showed he had a heart for people.

{Building The Leader In You}

  • You Can’t Be A Good Leader If You Don’t Have A Heart For People!

We see Moses had this.

The bible tells us we should have a heart for others.

Ephesians 4:32(a)

32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,

Good Leaders Care About Others!

Theodore Roosevelt made a quote:

"People Don’t Care How Much You Know Until They Know How Much You Care”

Caring for people is a necessity if you want to be a good leader. Having compassion…

Moses had shown this.

The Lord would use this compassion Moses had for people later on.

Years later…the Lord says:

Exodus 3:7

7 The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.

Read the way the Lord uses those words.

Exodus 3:9

9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them.

Remember the Lord KNOWS us.

we are learning things about ourself he knows already. “Moses, I know how it hurts you to SEE them suffering.” Well Moses, I too have seen…

their misery

their crying

their pain and I am concerned. and like you…

I will respond.

A Godly Leader Has Compassion!

So Moses has now discovered his compassion for his people. But he does something wrong in retaliation;

He has killed the Egyptian.

Exodus 2:13-14

13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?” 14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?

Who made you “ruler and judge” over us? That statement always read weird to me. Let’s read it in the NKJV:

Exodus 2:13–14 (NKJV):

13 And when he went out the second day, behold, two Hebrew men were fighting, and he said to the one who did the wrong, “Why are you striking your companion?”14 Then he said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”

Who made you a prince and a judge over us? A prince and a judge?

They knew who Moses was. They knew he was the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. The PRINCE!

He was a Hebrew living as an Egyptian.

He wasn’t an Egyptian…but lived with them.

They knew he was the prince… and probably hated him for it!

“Who made you prince?” and a ruler over us?

What house are you going to be part of?

You are not one of us!

Therefore, some of his own people didn’t like him.

But Moses would one day lead THIS man and his people out of Egypt. Leads us to #2.

{Building The Leader In You}

  • As A Leader You Will Be Called To Lead People Who May Not Like You!

There will be some people who don’t like you. It can be a million reasons why.

lots of them beyond your control. You hurt their feelings in kindergarten.

Someone lied to them saying you talk about them. so they talk about you.

You sat in their favorite seat.

We Can Mind Our Own Business And Try And Be Good Believers And People Will Still Not Like Us!

Especially when you start saying things they don’t like. Or doing things they don’t like…

But WE are the salt and light. People will be like that.

Moses was hated almost every day!

They even threatened to kill Moses on occasion. All he was doing was being led by the Lord.

This is where our heart for people kicks in.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

We should keep things in perspective. We have to lead by love.

Because it’s nothing others can do to take what the Lord has for you!

Psalm 37:23-24

23 If the Lord delights in a man’s way, he makes his steps firm; 24 though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.

This shows that we go through trouble occasionally… Most of the time dealing with people.

Remember the people didn’t like Moses…

but all he needed to do is to keep leading.

Don’t worry about what others think!

Stay Strong In Your Calling! If The Lord Put You In A Place, He Will Keep You There Until He Says It’s Time To Move!

Moses has to learn this.

These two men scare him into leaving the land.

Gets married.

Is watching the flock of his father in law.

Hiding…alone…not walking in purpose.

But this is where the Lord visits him. The Lord explains all of the suffering in Egypt.

He appeals to Moses’ heart for others.

The Lord tells them he also is concerned and will do something about it.

Exodus 3:10

“So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

Do we see how fast this happened?

{Building The Leader In You}

  • The Call Of Leadership Does Not Wait Until You’re Comfortable And Ready!

The Lord just introduced himself… Now he is giving a directive.

The Lord had just told them of all the suffering in Egypt. He told them that he’s about to do something.

So he tells Moses right then…to Go. Not just go…

But go, NOW.

How much time did Moses have to prepare? What was the plan?

How was this going to work?

He did the same thing to Jeremiah.

The Lord called him as a prophet.

Jeremiah 1:6

    • “Ah, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am only a child.”

Jeremiah says he’s not ready.

Jeremiah 1:7

    • But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.

He’s not waiting until we WANT to do it. He’s not waiting until we’re comfortable.

If We Are A Believer, We Are Called To Lead! What Are We Waiting For?

But Moses did the same thing.

Moses may have thought a lot of things at that moment. Imagine what he was asked to do.

But the Lord wouldn’t call him to go now… if he weren’t ready.

When The Lord Calls Us, That’s The Time To Start Moving!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • As You Lead The Lord Will Give You What You Need When You Need It!

We know Moses didn’t take well to what the Lord said to him.

Exodus 3:11

But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

Who am I?

Have you ever asked “why me?”

What if I can’t do what the Lord is asking? What if the people don’t listen to me?

What if the people don’t believe me? What if they make fun of me?

The Lord gives him the one answer we need.

Exodus 3:12a

And God said, “I will be with you.”

If The Lord Is With You, You Are Beyond Qualified!

We are called to lead…

Our insecurities don’t change that.

But our insecurities SHOW the power of God!

Why?

Because the Lord says:

Exodus 3:12(b)

And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

The Lord says it doesn’t matter what you think you can do. If you just go…you will do it.

You Weren’t Built To Lead Alone! The Lord Is Working Through You!

Many of us are too afraid to tell others about Christ. To be a leader…

But he works through our weaknesses.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

We aren’t supposed to do these things on our own strength anyway. It is the Lord’s strength that pushes us through!

You might not see yourself as a leader… the Lord does.

and he’s with you!

Jeremiah 1:9

9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “Now, I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”

He told Jeremiah TODAY he was appointed over nations and kingdoms…

It Is The Lord Who Established You! No One Can Change That!

It doesn’t matter who didn’t get the memo… What the Lord did…

No one can reverse or tear down!

The Lord Called You To Lead Others To Him!

{recap}:

The Lord has called us to be the salt and light of the world. We are leaders in a dark world…

That will point people back to him. Through our words…

Through our good deeds…

we are to point people back to the Lord!

{repeat}

“I Am A Leader!”

How can we build the leaders in ourselves? 4 lessons from Moses on leadership:
