Message Title:

“Jehovah Shalom - The Lord Is My Peace!”

(Understanding The Great Names Of God)

(Final Version)

Today we are finishing our talk about the names of God.

There are TONS of them…

many of you all have started your own studies on the names of the Lord. it’s awesome because it gives you insight to WHO you can pray to!

{Previous Names Of God}

  • Jehovah Jireh - The God Who Provides

{Whatever Your Need Is, God Can Provide A Solution For It!}

  • Jehovah Rapha - The God Who Heals

Page 1 of 10

  • Abba Father - The Name That Changes Everything

  • Jehovah Shammah - The God Who Is Present (“He Is With Me”)

Today:

Jehovah Shalom - The Lord Is My Peace! (“He Is My Peace”)

This comes from an encounter with Gideon. Judges 6

Israel was enslaved under Midian.

Because they were so oppressed…

they hid in the mountains and caves.

When they planted food for themselves.

their oppressors would invade the country. they’d take everything.

food: sheep, cattle, donkeys.

They pray to the Lord in their anguish.

The angel of the Lord comes down and talks to Gideon. who was hiding.

“The Lord is with you mighty warrior!” Gideon goes into complaints.

The Lord says go do something about your problem. We’ve heard this story many times.

Did a whole series about it “The Cycle From Sin To Deliverance” They have this conversation about how this will happen.

The Lord says he will be with Gideon. (Jehovah Shammah) The Gideon says let me have a sign it’s really you.

Page 1 of 10

He goes and makes food for the Lord.

Judges 6:20-21

20 The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And Gideon did so. 21 With the tip of the staff that was in his hand, the angel of the Lord touched the meat and the unleavened bread. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared.

The Lord told Gideon to take the offering and put it on a rock.

The Lord touched the food with the staff… fire comes from the rock.

burns up the food and the bread. and the Lord disappears.

Now Gideon realizes it was the Lord the entire time.

Judges 6:22

22 When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, “Ah, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”

Gideon had prob heard stories of how he can’t see the Lord’s face or he will die. He forgets he just had a conversation with him for the last hour or so.

So Gideon is now freaking out thinking he’s about to die. The Lord promptly tells him.

Judges 6:23

23 But the Lord said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.”

We might look at Gideon’s story and think he’s acting crazy. But we do the same thing sometimes…

The Lord gives us a word.

He’s given us promises.

Plans designed to prosper us and not harm us. Plans to give us a hope and FUTURE.

Yet at the first sign of something…

this is the one that’s gonna take us out.

You and the Lord have been just in a conversation about what he’s gonna do for you.

Page 1 of 10

The offering is accepted… The Lord disappears…

and now Gideon thinks because he’s alone he’s gonna die.

The Lord tells him to “Stop thinking that!”

Judges 6:23

“Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.”

Gideon believes the Lord.

Judges 6:24

24 So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

“The Lord Is My Peace”

This was because when the Lord SPOKE peace… there was peace.

the same God who SPOKE everything into existence… SPOKE the word peace.

Even when Gideon thought he was alone… The Lord took the offering and disappeared.

Yet…spoke to him

to calm him down.

The Lord Can Still Give You Peace Even When You Can’t See Him!

Some of us are going through a lot in life right now…

every where we look is something else to be upset about…

but we have a God who in the middle of everything can say one word. “Peace.”

With HIS words…

Page 1 of 10

peace comes.

Mark 4:35-38 (ESV)

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

Perishing??

that means dying.

they think they’re gonna die.

These men are fishermen…

so if they think they’re gonna die. it’s probably a big storm….

But:

These men were also disciples of Christ.

They have been walking with the LORD… He’s not somewhere else.

He’s right there…

and instead of panicking… He’s asleep.

He’s fully at peace…

He’s not worried…

Because he KNOWS this storm is gonna pass!

Even In The Middle Of Your Trial You Can Find Peace!

The disciples were panicking… like Gideon.

But the Lord said the same thing.

Mark 4:39-41

Page 1 of 10

39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

He spoke that same word “Peace.” And all the storms stopped.

One Word From Your God Can Change Everything Around You!

If the Lord can speak peace to the storms of life. if he can speak peace to Gideon…

Can he NOT speak peace to you?? Of course he can!

He’s the God of peace!

The storm came.

Storms come.

If you’re going through a storm now… There is a peace that can be found.

The Lord Can Give You Peace To Make It Though Your Storms!

There are more examples:

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were commanded to worship an idol they didn’t agree with.

If they didn’t…they would be thrown into a furnace.

Well they didn’t…

and the king questioned them about it.

Daniel 3:16-18

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O

Page 1 of 10

king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

They said they weren’t going to do it.

Their God can save them.

Verse 19-23

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

Look how many times it said they were tied up. at least 3…

being tied up signifies you have no defense. no hope.

nothing you can do in the middle of your trial… just suffer through it.

But they didn’t stay that way!

Daniel 3:24

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied, “Certainly, O king.” 25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

They were in the middle of their trial…

and someone ELSE identifies that the Lord has come down to comfort them. they are ALL unbound.

meaning they could FREELY walk around in their trial.. Not JUST because they were untied.

But because they were visited by the Prince of Peace.

How Do We Know They Were At Peace?

Page 1 of 10

Look at what happens.

Daniel 3:26-27

26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!” So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

They had an encounter with the Lord…

obviously they could have left anytime they wanted… yet the king had to ASK them to come out.

You Can Have So Much Peace In The Middle Of A Trial That It Doesn’t Even Look Like A Trial Any More!

That thing that was planned against you that was meant to take you out… doesn’t even bother you any more.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego could have stayed in the fire longer if they wanted to.

The Moment You Realize The Lord Is With You Is When You Realize Your Situation Is Already Better!

to EVERYone else…

they were in a fire.

they were going to die.

to THEM…

they were with the Lord.

there was no safer place to be. There is NOTHING more peaceful than that.

When God Gives You Peace, Your Problems Only Look Like Problems To Those Who Can’t See Him With You!

Page 1 of 10

John 14:27

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

You have a peace others can’t get. Because you KNOW the Lord… You have access to HIS peace.

When others are panicking… you are at peace.

Ways To Get More Of God’s Peace In Your Life:

  • Keeping Your Mind On Him

Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)

3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

Keep your minds on him and off the trials. Trials come…but the Lord delivers!

“Trials Come, But The Lord Delivers!”

  • Keeping Your Bible Open

Seeing what the Lord has done for so many others…that can be an encouragement for you… he can give you that peace also.

  • Keeping Your Praise On Him

There is something about music that calms us.

    • Samuel 16 talks about how Saul used David’s playing to calm him. Music can calm you!
