{All scriptures are NIV84 unless stated}

Matthew 5:13-15

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

The Lord calls us salt and light for the world. we aren’t supposed to hide these things.

You don’t take a light and hide it.

The light is supposed to be light for everyone in the whole house.

We are to be salt.

But not just salt…

It’s on each of us to be a light.

{Question:}

How Many Of Us Have Just ONE Light In Our House?

Most of us know we can’t light the whole house with just one light.

People want rooms in their home… each requires some light source.

Many of us have multiple lights in just ONE room! So we have MANY lights in our homes.

And when the bulbs go out… that room gets darker.

And to make sure the house is lit properly. Each assigned light needs to work.

We Are To Be A Light For Others!

Us being our light…

shines light for everyone!

He tells us more about ourselves.

Deuteronomy 28:13

13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.

YOU are the head.

NOT the tail.

That means there are some that might be the tail. It’s NOT you!

There is a top…

there is a bottom.

If you are his.

You are the top!

You are made to be different!

2 Corinthians 5:20 {new this week}

20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.

We represent Christ…

in a world where people don’t know him.

God makes his appeal through us.

And what should we be doing?

Matthew 5:16

16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

We are to let our light shine… so others can see it…

and praise our Father.

We are to light the path so others can see the Lord!

It’s not for us!

It’s for him!

We are set apart from the world… to point others back to him!

We Are To Lead Others To Christ!

If we are to lead others to Christ… That makes us a LEADER!

We are to be a leader for others!

{repeat}

“I Am A Leader!”

Let’s start today:

We are working to build this leader up in us.

Message Title:

“Building The Leader In You pt. 3”

We are still looking at the life of Moses.

and taking leadership lessons from him.

Where we left off:

We are still at the burning bush. Moses is making excuses.

Exodus 4

Moses - what if they don’t believe me? The Lord - throw the staff on the ground.

it becomes a snake.

Exodus 4:4-5

4 Then the Lord said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand. 5 “This,” said the Lord, “is so that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you.”

The Lord has shown Moses this sign…

“so they can believe the Lord has appeared to him.” But because Moses is making excuses…

The Lord does something else.

Verse 6-8

6 Then the Lord said, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was leprous, like snow. 7 “Now put it back into your cloak,” he said. So Moses put his hand back into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh. 8 Then the Lord said, “If they do not believe you or pay attention to the first miraculous sign, they may believe the second.

So now the Lord has shown him two signs. If they don’t believe one…

they can believe the second.

Verse 9

9 But if they do not believe these two signs or listen to you, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the river will become blood on the ground.”

The Lord is giving another sign. “Moses what else do you need?”

“You haven’t even gone yet?

How Many Times Do We Go Back And Forth With The Lord Over Our Assignment?

We are in chap 4 of Exodus.

Moses has already been arguing for a whole chapter.

So the Lord shows him THREE new signs. What does Moses do?

Exodus 4:10-12

10 Moses said to the Lord, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”

11 The Lord said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”

Again the Lord tells him not to worry.

The Lord will help him speak and teach him what to say.

Exodus 4:13

13 But Moses said, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.”

After all this talking… after all the signs.

after all the encouragement. Moses is not wanting to move forward.

And he is telling the Lord this is a waste of time. How does the Lord respond?

Exodus 4:14-17

14 Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and his heart will be glad when he sees you. 15 You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. 16 He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. 17 But take this staff in your hand so you can perform miraculous signs with it.”

The Lord became angry at Moses. He says what about your brother?

talk to him.

put words in his mouth.

I will help both of you. he can talk if you want…

And we all know Aaron goes with him to Egypt. But WAIT!

Something happened here!

Exodus 3:10

10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

The Lord is sending Moses to bring his people out. They argue about this for awhile.

Then the Lord brings up his brother Aaron.

Exodus 4:14b-15

“What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and his heart will be glad when he sees you. 15 You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do.

the plan changed.

How did this go from Moses doing it… to now him and Aaron?

This goes to #8.

  • Godly Leaders Know Their Assignment Will Be Given To Someone Else If They Wait Too Long!

Aaron wasn’t in the picture originally. It was Moses’ constant arguing.

It was his lack of faith.

So the Lord adds help.

The conversation was originally over.

The Lord told him to go… Moses messed it up.

Don’t we do that?

Don’t Make The Lord Have To Bring Others In To Do What You Were Supposed To!

{#3 point was the call doesn’t wait until you’re comfortable.}

Those people you were supposed to reach. Those people you were supposed to help.

Someone has to reach them!! And the Lord would prefer it be you.

The Lord may have given us the idea… but if we SIT on it too long…

someone else will do it.

Then we turn around and complain at how they do the job…

Don’t Complain How The Plan “B” Does The Job When You Were Supposed To Be The Plan “A”!

The Lord needs the job done! he would prefer it be you.

So Moses now decides to go. He has the staff.

He has his brother.

He has the Lord.

What does he do?

Exodus 4:18

18 Then Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Let me go back to my own people in Egypt to see if any of them are still alive.” Jethro said, “Go, and I wish you well.”

Wait…that’s not why Moses is going down there! Moses knows exactly why he is going back…

But he didn’t tell Jethro the reason. This leads into the next leadership trait:

  • Godly Leaders Don’t Run Their Mouths To EVERYONE About Their Assignment!

Moses had to use some wisdom here. Jethro was his father-in-law.

There was no need to share what the Lord told him to do. If Moses thought it was crazy…

Jethro likely would also!

If anything…Jethro would tell him NOT to go. He would tell him how crazy it was.

how it could be killed.

We can learn this also.

We tend to like to talk a lot. We talk about our plans.

we talk about our ideas. we talk about our callings.

Because we like others knowing we’re doing big things. But not everyone you talk to understands the assignment. Not everything needs to be told to everyone!

Some People Don’t Need To Know What You Are Doing Until AFTER You’ve Done It!

Jethro finds out later…

once everything is done.

And some of the people we’re talking to… need to find out later.

Not everyone needs to know you’re writing a book. Not everyone needs to know you’re helping someone.

Not everyone needs to know you’re stepping out on faith to start a business. Not everyone needs to know what the Lord told you.

Share Your Ideas With Those Who You Feel Can Help You!

There ARE some people who will help you.

But there are also some who will try and stop you.

Some people will even try and steal your ideas so they can get credit! You have to know the difference!

And for #10:

Made me think of the 10 plagues on Egypt.

  • River turned to Blood - the Nile and all the water

  • Frogs - Frogs swarmed the Land, even in homes

  • Gnats - gnats infested the land…everywhere - {even the magicians couldn’t do this}

- the magicians even told Pharaoh that this was the finger of God. {Ex. 8:19} “Even your enemies can recognize the Lord working through you!”

  • Flies - swarms of insects

  • Livestock Disease - disease killed the livestock of the Egyptians

  • Boils - painful boils on the Egyptians and their livestock

  • Hail - hail, mixed with fire, destroyed crops and livestock

  • Locusts - eating the remaining crops and vegetation

  • Darkness - nothing was seen anywhere - darkness that could be “felt”

  • Death of the Firstborn - the death of every firstborn in Egypt, including Pharaoh’s son. Each time…

God would move on their behalf…

Pharaoh would SAY he’d let God’s people go. Yet change his mind when the plague stopped. Constant “no.”

Constant rejections.

Yet Moses continued.

  • Godly Leaders Won’t Let Set Backs Stop Them From Their Assignment!

Moses never lost sight of the mission…

Pharaoh told him over and over that he could NOT take Israel from him. Yet Moses didn’t give up.

Even If You Hear No, Make Sure To Pay Attention To What The Lord Is Doing!

If the Lord is with you…

and you are on your assignment… they aren’t telling YOU no.

they are saying it to the Lord!

Don’t give up!!

Galatians 6:9

9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Keep going because there is mission to complete.

If the Lord is with you…

he will make it happen.

{recap:}

{repeat}

“I Am A Light!”

You are the light of the world. You are ambassadors of Christ.

If you are are believer… you are a leader!

As a leader, there are many lessons we can learn. Here are 10 Lessons From Moses on Leadership:

{Building The Leader In You}

  • You Can’t Be A Good Leader If You Don’t Have A Heart For People!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • As A Leader You Will Be Called To Lead People Who May Not Like You!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • The Call Of Leadership Doesn’t Wait Until You’re Comfortable And Ready!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • As You Lead The Lord Will Give You What You Need When You Need It!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • Godly Leaders Realize That The Lord Has The Answers When They Don’t!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • Godly Leaders Know That What They Do Will Be Rewarded!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • Godly Leaders Use What The Lord Has Already Given Them!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • Godly Leaders Know Their Assignment Will Be Given To Someone Else If They Wait Too Long!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • Godly Leaders Don’t Run Their Mouths To EVERYONE About Their Assignment!

{Building The Leader In You}

  • Godly Leaders Won’t Let Set Backs Stop Them From Their Assignment!

{repeat}

“I Am A Leader!”

What type of leader are you?

We have to make sure we are leading like Moses.

Not like Pharaoh…. Both men were leaders….

Both men were made examples of.

Pharaoh would deny the Lord until the trouble came. then he’d acknowledge him.

and when the trouble would stop.

he’d go right back to his old ways.

Let’s stop denying the call of the Lord. Let’s be the leader he called us to be!
